Performer | Choreographer | Dance Mediator
Jovana Petrovska (she/her) is a Macedonian dancer, choreographer, and dance mediator based in Cologne. Her journey began at the age of seven in her hometown of Skopje, where she received a rigorous classical education at the State Ballet School "Ilija Nikolovski-Luj." She later moved to Germany to deepen her practice, graduating from the Center for Contemporary Dance (CCD) in Cologne.
Jovana’s artistic research is situated at the intersection of body language, culture, traditional dance, and contemporary movement. This was notably explored in her Bachelor work ПОТЕКЛО (Origin) and her solo "...wo ich noch nie war..." (...where I’ve never been...), mentored by Patricia Carolin Mai. During her studies, she performed in projects by choreographers such as Rafaele Giovanola and Sade Mamedova, and participated in a workshop with William Forsythe at the Museum Folkwang.
A central pillar of Jovana’s practice is her deep, ongoing commitment to the contemporary scene in North Macedonia. She has become a recurring voice at the "Credance Dance" Festival at the National Opera and Ballet in Skopje: in June 2024, she premiered the duo "Your thoughts are not my words. Your words are not my thoughts" (with Lea Mühle), followed by the creation of the duo "A creation named Swallow" in June 2025. In 2026, she returns to the festival for the third consecutive year to present her latest work.
Her international presence includes features at the Sommerwerft Festival in Frankfurt and the 15minuten Festival in Cologne. Most recently, Jovana was a resident artist at Quartier am Hafen in Cologne (March–April 2026), developing her new piece, "Wording a common skirt." This work premieres on May 23, 2026, at Barnes Crossing in Cologne.
Furthering the development of this project, Jovana has been awarded a residency at Laboratorium in Skopje. During this residency, she will continue the evolution of "Wording a common skirt," restaging and expanding the piece in collaboration with local Macedonian artists.
As a dance mediator, Jovana interweaves her creation methodology with teaching, sharing her joy for dance through both movement and pedagogy. She remains dedicated to exploring how movement can serve as a bridge between individual identity, ancestral heritage, and collective cultural memory.
